Description

King’s Indian Defence is a historic and at the same time very modern opening. It has been tested to this day by the top players in the history of chess. In many, if not most cases, as a basic opening option.  Black deliberately allows White to gain control of the center. Their purpose is subsequently with the moves …e5 and …c5 to ‘hit’ it. Black attacks with all his weapons on the opposing king creating endless complications in the position. White has a variety of continuations to deal with it. One really interesting and with excellent shots for the white continuity is that of Averbakh!

Averbakh.

Averbakh bears the name of the well-known Soviet grandmaster, theorist and finesse specialist Yuri Lvovich Averbakh. In the early 1950s, Averbakh was one of the first grandmasters to try this continuation more than once.

What makes this variation special is the way the white is developed. What he tries to do is not to focus his attack exclusively on the queen’s wing. He changes his plans to reduce black’s offensive risks on the king’s wing. In essence he is aiming for a calmer and more strategic play in his attempt to control the position. And to a large extent he succeeds without this meaning that in many cases he does not become aggressive and tactical. In conclusion, we conclude that White maintains his initial advantage.

The opening often makes it possible to choke Black inside the board, with positional power play, some occasional quick attacks on the king and interesting finishes. It is one of the few Indian king variations without the marathon pawn fight. An extremely interesting book by Jan Boekelman!
