Description
The Dutch (1…f5) is a very interesting continuation as an answer to White’s 1.d4. It is often chosen for surprise and even for a main opening by chess players of a very high level. It has very interesting strategic and tactical ideas which are certainly worth studying.
A possible basic continuation of this opening is the Leningrad variation. It is in fact the continuation in which Black chooses to make a fiancée from the king’s wing. The style of black’s arrangement certainly resembles the formations of black in the king’s Indian.
GM and author of the book Vladimir Malaniuk could be called an expert on the Leningrad variation for decades. He has used it in most of his black games against the 1.d4 he has come up with many original designs that established the Dutch into an active and dangerous weapon. Using his knowledge and years of experience he has built a very strong repertoire. The Dutch can generally be used frequently when Black wishes to play for the win, especially in decisive games in which the player needs the result.
The book is divided into 3 main chapters. In the first chapter the author presents and analyses every(!) possible response of White to 1.d4 f5. Then Leningrad is presented in detail. The second presents Reti against the Dutch. In the third the reader will encounter the English-Dutch defence. Finally the book offers a repertoire against 1.c4 and 1.Nf3.
